Academic & Spiritual Formation Overview

The academic training for the Archdiocese of Atlanta, Diaconal Formation Program is on criteria by which candidate’s suitability for ordination is determined. The formal classes are conducted on two Saturdays each month, except July and August. In July the candidates attend a mandatory three-day retreat. The class days are normally from 7:00 or 8:00am through 5:00pm.

The academic phase of the program has been structured to acquaint deacon candidates with all four major areas of importance for diaconal ministry in the Church. It begins with an Aspirancy Year, which allows the candidates to be exposed to instruction in theology, spirituality, and ministry. This is a time where they will be involved in prayer and moments of reflection, to discern whether or not he is called to enter the formal phase of formation. During this period their wives, if married, will be involved so that they may understand the commitment their husbands are undertaking. Grades are generally not given during Aspirancy.

The program has been designed to provide a logical flow in curriculum. Each course establishes a base of knowledge and understanding upon which subsequent courses can build and expand. The formation program can not possibly be all inclusive and, therefore, relies on an effective post-ordination path of study. This would allow the deacon to deepen and expand his knowledge and understanding in various areas of study most pertinent to his ministry and interest.

The candidates are exposed to the courses most important for the academic formation of a deacon. This begins with a study of spiritual growth followed by studies in Church history, Sacred Scripture, theology, Canon Law, homiletics, pastoral studies, and more.

While the academic formation program is not an accredited entity, the highest academic standards are applied.

Spiritual formation is an integral part of each of the class days. Liturgy of the Hours, Communion Services, and Holy Hours are all included in meeting days. Additionally, Days of Reflection and Retreats are incorporated into the class year. Wives are required to participate in all Days of Reflection and retreats, when space allows. There is at least one Day of Reflection each year exclusively for the wives.
